Training in processing and analyzing depth data using Base Editor 5.5 software, editing paper charts with Paper Chart Composer 4.1 software 

From November 1 to November 12, 2021, the Vietnam Hydrographic Office cooperated with Teledyne Caris/Canada to organize an online training course on processing and analyzing depth data using Base Editor 5.5 software and paper chart editor with Paper Chart Composer 4.1 software (PCC 4.1) for officials and technical staff specialized in cartography of agencies and units (Department of Cartography of General Staff of Vietnam People’s Army, Maritime and Mapping Devision of Staff of Vietnam People’s Navy, Ocenographic and Hygrographic Devision of Staff of Vietnam People’s Navy).

During the training process, the expert offers many types of exercises, from different data sources for trainees to participate in practical training, to discuss and answer relevant questions;

Currently, the Vietnam People's Navy is mainly using Hypack software to process depth measurement data, and Caris GIS to edit paper charts. However, these softwares have some limitations:  i) The function of processing and analyzing objects according to 3D models for small, difficult-to-identify, deep-sea objects still faces many difficulties. ; ii) The software system for processing depth measurement data and the editing software, the paper and electronic chart editing software is not synchronized, leading to the data conversion taking a lot of time; iii) Supports few input data formats, limiting external data sources to be included in the editor.

Advantages of Base Editor 5.5 software

Integrating many intelligent algorithms makes the feature of processing and analyzing depth measurement data according to a powerful 3D spatial model, determining the existence of small, difficult to identify objects located deep on the seabed becomes easier. easier and more accurate;

The feature of selecting, removing and filtering objects is very flexible, giving users many options to process and analyze data quickly and accurately;

Support many types of input and output data formats, can output data according to S-102 standard, this is the standard data that will be used in the near future;

The data after processing through  Base Editor 5.5  will synchronize with the input data of the electronic chart editing software S57 Composer and PCC 4.1, making chart editing very convenient;

Advantages of PCC 4.1 . paper chart editor software

PCC's data is synchronized with the data of S57 Composer, so the data conversion between electronic and paper charts is almost no need to re-edit the content;

Support multiple input data formats to help chart editing process will have more data sources for editing;

In addition, PCC has many more intelligent and flexible features than Caris Gis such as automatic masking function; convert coordinate systems…;

Vietnam is a member of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), paper and electronic chart products of Vietnam have been widely distributed around the world through the UKHO and NHS, access to advanced data processing and charting technology is essential in order to improve the accuracy of chart products;

The Vietnam Hydrographic Office organizes a training course for the staff, technical staff specialized in cartography, which is very necessary and timely to help the trainees grasp and apply the processing software. data, the most advanced chart editor today into chart production, meeting the technical requirements of IHO.

After 2 weeks of basic training, trainees have grasped the process of processing and analyzing depth data using Base Editor 5.5 software; Editing paper charts with PCC 4.1 software. At the end of the training, the trainees are granted a certificate of course completion by Teledyne Caris/Canada.
